Hair Transplant Experience|A Korean Comedian’s 1,500-Graft Hair Transplant (Part 2)

Autologous hair transplantation has been gaining attention among people struggling with hair loss.
The interest is particularly strong among public figures, for whom appearance often plays an important professional role.
In this article, we continue the personal story of Kim Hyun-gi, a comedian selected through KBS’s open recruitment programme.
From his post-procedure recovery to his emotional state during the temporary shedding phase—often referred to as the “dark phase”—his candid account offers valuable insight for anyone considering a hair transplant.

Life After the Procedure: The First Two Weeks
When asked how he spent his time after surgery, Kim shared that he largely stayed indoors for about two weeks.
During this period, he avoided strenuous activity but still managed light exercise such as walking or gentle jogging.
Despite the lifestyle restrictions, he reported very little pain.
The recovery, he said, was more inconvenient than uncomfortable, reinforcing his impression that modern hair transplant procedures are far less daunting than many expect.
Managing Aftercare and Early Expectations
Kim explained that he followed post-operative care instructions carefully, using prescribed scalp sprays to support graft survival and disinfecting the donor area daily—even though it was difficult to see clearly.
He admitted feeling anxious at times, but was reassured by his doctor that healing was progressing well.
At this stage, he was already satisfied with the hairline design, though he described the visual effect as somewhat similar to using hair-fibre powder.
Still, he expressed optimism, believing the transplanted hair would eventually grow and create a new image.
Clinic staff added that many patients later express regret—not for having the procedure, but for not doing it sooner.
Among colleagues in the entertainment industry, hair transplants are often more common than people realise, though many choose to keep it private.
Pain, Inconvenience, and a Long-Term Perspective
When asked about pain or discomfort, Kim stated that he experienced almost none throughout the process.
Instead, he focused on the long-term view, comparing hair transplantation to planting rice: seeds must first be planted and nurtured before any harvest can be expected.
He encouraged others dealing with hair loss to consider the procedure, emphasising patience and persistence rather than immediate results.
One Month Later: Entering the “Shedding Phase”
About one month after surgery, Kim recorded a self-filmed update.
By this point, he had entered the temporary shedding phase, during which transplanted hairs fall out before new growth begins.
Although his hair did not yet look fuller—and in some ways appeared thinner—he described feeling more confident than before.
Even during this so-called “dark phase,” his mindset had shifted. He felt reassured knowing that the follicles were still in place and preparing for regrowth.
Kim explained that while much of the transplanted hair had shed, the small visible openings in the scalp were a positive sign that new hair would soon emerge.
According to medical guidance he received, visible growth typically begins around seven to eight months, with final results expected after about one year.
Reactions From Others and Looking Ahead
His openness about the procedure led to mixed reactions from people around him—some expressed envy, others concern, and many curiosity.
Followers and acquaintances alike responded with interest, reflecting the growing openness around hair restoration.
Kim concluded by sharing that he plans to continue documenting his progress, hoping that his experience will help others feel less alone in their concerns.
Summary: More Than Just Hair Growth
Kim Hyun-gi’s six-week journey highlights several important aspects of hair transplantation:
- The immediate recovery period may require lifestyle adjustments, but significant pain is uncommon.
- The temporary shedding phase, typically occurring between two weeks and one month post-procedure, is a normal and expected part of the process.
- While appearance may temporarily worsen, psychological confidence often improves as patients look toward long-term results.
Hair transplantation is generally understood to show gradual improvement after seven to eight months, with full results around one year.
Although patience is essential, Kim’s experience demonstrates that for many, the procedure represents not just physical change, but a meaningful step toward overcoming long-held insecurities.
